WHO'S IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD?

Survey your school and identify the cultural mix of the students:

  • how many nationalities are represented?
  • how many and what languages are spoken?
  • how many are bilingual (or more)?

How does this compare with your national statistics?

How did the people who came from other lands travel to your country and when? Why did they leave their original country? What stories do they have to tell about leaving their own homeland, and settling into your part of the world? How do they continue to maintain their own culture within another country?

A fascinating area to explore - and one that the class could obviously take much further if they wanted to.
