"WHAT ARE THEY LIKE?"

Sir John Nelthorpe & Colenso

Sir John Nelthorpe School Brigg, North Lincolnshire

Our ideas:

  • I think New Zealand is smaller than England about the size of Ireland.

  • New Zealand has a North and South Island.

  • It is not attached to any other country.

  • It is on the other side of the world to us. In the southern Hemisphere near Australia.

  • Not sure how many people live in the other country - less than England judging by your class.

  • The people who live there look just like us but with a better tan.

  • I think they speak English with some Australian words like Cobber.

  • The native culture is Aborigine.

  • They wear animal clothes and play the didgeridoo.

  • No idea what their traditional costume is like.

  • We know of Captain Cook - don't know how old NZ is.

  • We don't know a lot about the history of New Zealand except that it belongs to Britain so it had the same Kings and Queens. It was on our side during World War II.

  • Not sure what the countryside looks like but the North Island is quite Hilly. I don't know about the South Island but it has lots of Sheep.

  • The climate is the same as England because it is quite far south. It has more rain than us also.

This is what we think....

  • One group thought Britain was slightly bigger than New Zealand, the other thought Britain was about half the size of Australia

  • Britain is made up of two main islands that include Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales

  • It is in North West Europe, 8 million people live there

  • The people who live there are Caucasian, Negro, Pakistani: it's multi-racial and they speak English and Welsh

  • Their traditional costume includes kilts, tights, fluffy dresses, corsets, tophats, waist-coats, suits

  • We know that the history of Britain includes:
    • WWII against Germany, London was bombed, many soldiers died
    • Royal family
    • The Battle for Scottish Independence (Braveheart)
    • Class society

  • We think there are lots of farms and cottages, not many hills, kind of dreary. It's hot sometimes, but mostly cold, smoggy in the cities....
