"THERE'LL BE BLUE BIRDS......."

war memories My nan remembers being evacuated to a place called Seen in Wiltshire with her older sister and twin brother. They stayed in a nice house and went to the local school. And after a while her mother and younger sister came down to live with a farmer to be his house keeper, so she moved to live on the farm.

She also remembers having a gas mask and she had to practice putting the gas mask on as quickly as possible at school. She also had to take with her everywhere she went. She remembers going back to London to live in 1943.

She also remembers going to bed in the garden in the air raid shelter, instead of going up stairs to bed. She remembers a sort of aeroplane with flames coming out of the tail end which was known as a V.1. (Doodle Bug) when the flames stopped she would stand and count until she heard the explosion. The more you counted the further away the bomb dropped.
