Sarah Roberts is 15 years old and comes from Solihull. Her leg started aching in October '95, but she didn't think it was anything serious. But then it got so bad she had to take time off school, so eventually she went to the hospital for some scans. The next day she was told she had a tumour on the top of the femur in her left leg - 'It was cancer'.

She got very depressed before she realized that an illness isn't a punishment but just an unfortuanate part of life. She had to have three sessions of chemotherapy before the operation and three afterwards. She found the treatment very tough. She meet a girl in hospital called Gillian who changed her outlook on life. Gillian had been ill and told Sarah to be really positive and to fight it all the way.

The dead part of Sarah's bone was removed, before the operation she was told she might lose her leg, so she made the most of walking before the operation. When she woke up.....
