"WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO?"

Loss of Rainforest/Globle warming

My issue that is a concern to our youth is on the Rainforests.

What is a Rainforest?

Rainforests provide homes for the greatest variety of wildlife found anywhere in the world. Thousands of different plants and trees live there and did you know ? There may be hundreds of different types of insect living on one tree.

Where do we find them?

Most of the world's Rainforests are in the southern hemisphere. Rainforests grow in the hot wet lands near the equator. The biggest Rainforest of all is in Brazil and is called the Amazon.

About the Amazon

The Amazon Rainforest is in Brazil and covers an area of 5 million sq km. The Rainforest supplies 25% of the world's oxygen. But it has been bulldozed for timber.

rainforest Trees in the Amazon are being bulldozed illegally by loggers. This is killing many plants in the process, plants which may have not been found! Over half the known plants and animals live in the Rainforests. The trees there produce many type of fruit and nut. 60 football pitches of Rainforests is lost a minute. Approx. So in a year the area of Rainforests being cut will make the size of England Wales and Scotland. Approx.

The tree is the lung of the world........Because we need the trees to give us Oxygen.

Because of the Rainforests being killed it produces global warming and many holes in the Ozone layer.

The Rainforests holds so many forms of life and us humans are killing it. There are many Rainforest all over the world with the same problem. The Rainforests hold many amazing animals like the colourful birds right down to the spiders! Rainforests have been on this earth right from when it was made millions of years ago and now we are killing it off!!

Tribe under threat

Unfortunately the tribal people of the Rainforests are being pushed out by settlers who want to cut down the Rainforest for timber or for farming. The tribes have nowhere else to go; they have only ever lived in the Rainforest. Sadly, their future is threatened.

I feel strong about this issue because Rainforests hold so much life, for humans and for animals and the millions of plants that live there. Also the Rainforests hold many plants which can make many powerful medicines. Tribes live in the Rainforests and live from it and in a way we are killing their home!!

What can you do?

  1. Educate people about the great value of the Rainforests, and emphasise the global problems destroying them will cause.

  2. Don't buy Exotic plants or animals or item made from tropical timber.

  3. Write to the organizations involved in the saving the Rainforests for more information.
