"WHAT WE'RE REALLY LIKE"
Harlow, England
|
Highlights from Sir John Nelthorpe School Brigg, North Lincolnshire
Your original concept of our country is not entirely true...
- How Big Is The Country? About twice the size of Tasmania.
- How Many Islands? Yes, there are two main islands, the largest being England, Scotland and Wales; the second is Northern Ireland and the
Republic of Ireland. The latter country, however, is not a part of the UK.
- Whereabouts? Your original answer (North West Europe) was correct, Well Done!
- How Many People Live In Britain? Slightly more than 8 million... another 50 million extra would be more accurate.
- What Do People Look Like? Your answer was correct.
- What Language Do They Speak? English is the primary language, though there is Welsh and Celtic variants.
- Native Culture Football, Cricket, Rugby, Fish and Chips, the Bulldog.
- Traditional Costume Kilts are Scottish! Bowler hats, suits and umbrellas are very rarely worn. Corsets, top hats and tails are out of date (by
nearly 80 years).
- How Old Is The Country? About 3,000 to 4,000 years of charted history.
- The History (a few bits we consider very important)
- Invaded by Romans, Saxons, Vikings, Angles, Normans and Germans (nearly)
- English Civil War 1600s
- Industrial Revolution 1800s to early 1900s
- England won Football World Cup in 1966.
- Countryside
- England: Flat/slightly hilly, large cities
- Wales: Mountainous
- Scotland: Very mountainous, sparsely populated
- N.Ireland: Quite hilly.
- Climate Temperate, yet very variable and comfortable. We
have not had a smog problem since the early 1900s.
Thanks for your ideas, we found them very entertaining.
Regards, The members of Team 2 Sir John Nelthorpe School England.
