"WHAT WE'RE REALLY LIKE"

Fochabers, Scotland

Milne's High School Fochabers, Nr Inverness

The ideas that you sent us were quite funny! I'm sure that the ideas we sent you will also be a bit strange!

  • "Braveheart" was a story from the past and we don't still go around in kilts doing the highland fling. We do wear kilts at special occasions like weddings. A lot of Scottish people learn highland dancing but we wouldn't say they know it!

  • The hills you mentioned are only in some parts of Scotland, the Highlands, but the majority of Scotland is made up of cities and is very busy.

  • We don't still live in white painted crofts with thatched roofs - that was back in the times that "Braveheart" was based on! We stay in houses just the same as any other modern country.

We hope this helps you build up a better picture of us here in Scotland.

  • Our country has about 5.5 million people living in it. It is attached to England and is part of the British Isles. The island which lies beside Scotland is called Ireland. There are many islands which lie off the coast of Scotland such as Skye, Stornaway, Shetland and the Orkneys. Scotland is right on the other side of the world from you. We speak English but Gaelic is spoken further north in the Highlands.

  • Our national costume, kilts, are really only worn at weddings and other special occasions such as Rabbie Burns' night - we'll explain about that later!

  • Our climate can get quite hot in summer but in winter it is usually quite cold and in March windy.

  • We are white and quite pale skinned. There are varieties of hair colour from blonde to black.

  • People have been living here for thousands of years.

Stephen Mc., Claire M. 1F1

We have read your ideas of Scotland and found them quite funny.

  • Most of the time we wear jeans, tracksuits, shorts etc. To tell you the truth most of the people in my class haven't worn a kilt or played the bagpipes!

  • There are a lot of farmers in Scotland and a lot of animals but I know that there is more in New Zealand especially sheep.

  • Our sports are football, rugby, running, etc.

  • There are lots of distillaries in Scotland. Fochabers is home to Baxters and the River Spey runs through Fochabers.

  • In the past we fought with the English but now we don't.

David & Hamish

Sorry we're a bit late but here we are to set the record straight.

  • For one thing we are not like Braveheart. Our ancestors were mabye like that but things have moved on since then!

  • Our houses are modern like yours. We don't live in thatched black houses like you imagine, although there are a couple in our area. Houses here are probably similar to yours in New Zealand.

  • In your message you thought we spoke English with a Scottish accent and you were right!
