"WHAT WE'RE REALLY LIKE"

Mt Maunganui, New Zealand

Mt Maunganui College Mt Maunganui

  • The population of New Zealand is about 3.5 million. New Zealand is not flat land but it's not all mountains either. It's got some of both along with all the lakes, rivers, beaches and cities.

  • NZ is also not close to the Australian coast. There are a few ranges in NZ like the Southern Alps and little ones in the north. There are about 10 significant mountains. There are 3 active volcanoes, White Island which is off our coast, Ruapehu which is near Lake Taupo and has just been erupting and Mayor Island - the others are just dormant.

  • Most of you are wrong about the culture, however. Aboriginals are Australia's indigenous people and have nothing to do with New Zealand really. Our indigenous people are the Maori, and I happen to be one. (And proud of it).
Our traditional costume is not a shepherd's outfit! If you were looking at the Maori, it might be piupiu (flax skirts), and korowai (cloaks made mostly from feathers), although we don't run around in them! But just looking at the average Kiwi, it would probably be gumboots, a swandri, a black singlet, and a big round hat.

  • New Zealand is 268704 sq kilometres.

  • New Zealand is actually a bit bigger than Great Britain approximately 25000 square kilometres bigger. The weather ranges from a tropical climate up north to a very cold atmosphere down south.

  • It is made up of about three islands, the North Island, the South Island and Stewart Island. Europeans have been living in New Zealand for 2 or 3 hundred years. The Maori have been living here for hundreds of years.
