WHAT'S IN A NAME?

What are the different types of names people in your class have?

See if you can find out what your name means, where it originally came from and if there were special reasons you were given that name. You can look at both first and second names.

Sometimes people will give each other a nickname or shorten a name that they think is too hard to say, but often they don't realise how important and special that name is to the person who carries it.

Some people have names that have been passed down through generations of their family or whanau. Some names describe important places or events. Some names relate to an occupation. Some people were named after a favourite actor or a best friend. Some names were chosen because they sounded right or simply because someone liked it.

Find out what sort of names people in your pair country have and what the names mean.
