GO FISH
We are both island nations and as such we both have a long history of fishing the waters that surround us.
Identify the main fishing grounds that surround your country and name the main species that are fished there. You might like to design a way of presenting this information graphically. Compare the different species of fish there are in the southern and northern hemispheres. What differences are there? Why might there be different species in one part of the world to another?
What other issues to do with fishing in your part of the world can you find out about eg quotas, traditional fishing rights, boundaries, markets, politics, traditional ways of doing things, and maritime stories and myths.
Something that concerns us all is the way our fishing stocks are becoming depleted through over fishing and through pollution. Drift-netting is banned in New Zealand waters, what other rules and regulations have governments put in place to help maintain the fishing stocks.
See if you can make up some rules that you think will help maintain our fishing stocks. Keep in mind that many families' only income comes from fishing and that you still want to be able to buy fish and chips for a reasonable price .
