- WHAT'S IN THE SUPERMARKET? -

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Visit your local corner shop, dairy, grocery store or supermarket and tell us about the range of breakfast cereals you find there.

List the products you find and where they were produced.

Think about the way the products are being promoted or marketed. What slogans and images are being used to attract people to buy?

Share information with your pair school about what you have found. Choose one product that is found in both countries to investigate together. If your pair school is on holiday and hasn't completed this project, you can do it without them. Here are some guiding questions that might help your investigation:-

  • How much does it cost today?
  • What did it cost a year ago?
  • How much do you get for your money - quantity?
  • How much does it cost per flake, puff or single item?
  • What is it made of?
  • What nutritional information is offered on the box?
  • How are they advertised on the TV, in newspaper, magazines and on radio?
  • What are their sales?
  • What is their target market?
  • Other information - e.g. Is their box recyclable, do they support community projects or run competitions.
