money! If I had ten pounds to spend to enjoy myself for a weekend, I would buy food, watch videos, go to the local shopping centre and save the rest. To buy food for under £10, I could get fast food from say Macdonalds. I would get either a chicken sandwich or Nuggets and chips. This would come to about £2.50. I would then rent a video from a video shop. I could borrow a video for about £2.99 for 2 days. When I go to the shopping centre to spend some money. I could buy a book or/and stationery. I could also buy jewellery and make-up. This would come to about £8-9.

From a local Indian restaurant my share of the meal is:

    • Chicken Tikka £2.20p
    • King Prawn Bhuna £4.95p
    • Onion Bhaji £1.50p
    • Nan Bread £1.20p
    • Total £9.85p
I buy a magazine from my local newsagents called Sugar and it costs me £1.60. A pair of Lee jeans costs £22. A pair of Nike Trainers costs £45.

The discos for kids costs about 50p to a pound. Discos like night clubs and that won't let kids in. The cost to Newcastle and Whitely bay costs me 20p and the same amount to the same places cost the same. On the bus it takes about 1 hour on the metro it takes 30 minutes. For me when I go to watch a sport I go to St. James's park to watch Newcastle united play football if my ma's got the money. It costs about £25.00 for a ticket.

Disco: The perfect place for a bit of dance and the opportunity to meet new people. But how much is it to get in, and more importantly can you get in? You can get in to most discos but no night-clubs unless it's a special event. A ticket will cost from £2-£3. Hopefully you won't need any money for drinks as if you find a nice lad he might buy them for you!

Bus Tickets: As we don't have all the necessary shops for a decent weekend's shopping you'll regularly need to take the bus to the near by towns. But how much will a ticket cost you? To Grimsby (which has Freshney Place to offer shopping wise) - £1.13 single. To Scunthorpe - 60p single. To Sheffield (which has Meadowhall Shopping Centre to offer) - £5 Return.

Football Match: Considering England has so many good teams you're bound to want to go and see a game. But how much will this pleasure cost you? For a premiership game you can expect to pay anything from £30 to £50.

(NOTE: There are 100 pence in a pound)

You can't really do much with £10 ($20) but we've thought of a few ideas.

Say you wanted to go to the cinema, it would cost £2.50 for a U, PG or 12 rated film, but a 15 or 18 would cost £4.50. Popcorn is very dear. Prices range from £1.75 to £4.50. Drinks are around £1.50 and bags of sweets range from 60 pence to £3.00.

Say you wanted to go shopping, you wouldn't be able to buy much. Possibly a normal t-shirt or a few things of make-up or nail varnish. Trainers are at least £20, some range up to about £120 if you want a designer pair or a well known name. A pair of jeans from a high street shop range from £20 - £40. In Cardiff there are a lot of alternative shops with previously owned and unusual clothes, all quite cheap.

If you fancy a quick snack or a lunch time meal, there are lots of different things you can eat. A McDonalds (burger, fries, drink, ice-cream) would cost around £4.00. Pizza costs around £4.90 with a drink. If you want a lighter snack you can have a bagel or a bagette for around £1.50. There is a shopping precinct called THE CAPITOL which has a large selection of food upstairs. Italian, chicken, Chinese, Barbeque, continental, cakes, salad bar and many more.

Ice skating costs about £3.00 for an hour. Bowling is £3.55 per person for one game. Quazar (a lazer shooting game) costs £1.50 for one game which lasts quarter of an hour. A ticket to see a show in the theatre or concert hall is around £4-£8. A 'gig' would cost between £10 and £20.

As you can see there are many things to do in Cardiff, but you certainly couldn't do all them with just £10.

If I had £10, I would go and see The Empire Strikes Back (Star Wars). (£2.60). Then I would go and buy a Graphic Novel in Forbidden Planet. (£5.00). Then, I would buy a single in Virgin. (New Single=£1.99). Bus Fare (40p).

If I had ten pounds I would go and see 'Return of the Jedi' and would buy an album by the Prodigy or the Manic Street Preachers. And then I would go home.

What you can do for £10 in Cardiff

    Activities
Ice skating: £3.50 (includes skate hire).
    Cinema: £2.50 if you're under 15, £3.50 if you're an adult.
    Swimming: £0.75 if you're under 15, £1.50 if you're an adult.

    Eating out
For £4.49 you can have a small pizza and soft drink from pizza hut.
For £0.28 you can have a sausage roll from greggs.
For £2.20 you can have a small milk shake, a beef burger, and a small fries.

If I had that much money to spend in one weekend, I think I would probably put it in the bank, because you can't have enough fun to fill a weekend with just $20. I get $7 a week pocket money, sometimes $5 or $6 more if I mow the neighbours lawns. I earn the $7 by doing chores for Mum and Dad, as well as my usual like hanging out the washing, doing the dishes, etc.

Lunch would just be a sandwich which would cost about $2.00 with all the stuff in it. Dinner that night would be at a restaurant, I'd have steak + salad, and hot apple pie for about $20.00. My old jeans have worn out and I get a new pair of Levis for $100.00. My pocket money each week is $7.00.

Bus $18.00 from Tuaranga to Hamilton. Train $23.00 from Tauranga to Hamilton. To get in to a dance party $5.00-$10.00. Will I be able to get in to the dance party? NO due to my age.

Martina B Mt Maunganui College Mt Maunganui

Hey, Martina, you could have got into my dance party - it was called OMNIVORE and it was held in the Town Hall in Wellington on March 1. There was no age limit 'cos it was alcohol-free and about 1,200 people came.... it went off! It cost a bit more to get in though - $20. [ :)Ali ]

Watch some sport - Most local sports are free to watch, but international sport (e.g.Cricket or Rugby) costs about $10 for an open air seat and $15 for an undercover seat. Clothing - Billabong Tee shirt and levi jeans - about $40 each.
