THE ALL TERRAIN VEHICLE

Design brief

We are coming to visit and explore your area.

As our hosts you have offered to be our tour guides and transport us around your region to see all the sights and scenes.

To save a lot of mucking about moving from one vehicle to another, it has been decided that an all terrain vehicle will be designed. The vehicle will use local materials and will be specially designed and fitted out for local conditions.

Your task

  • List the sights you will take us to see.
  • Give an account of the type of terrain, land use, structures and geography that the vehicle will have to traverse to get us to the spots of interest within your region.
  • Design a vehicle using only local materials. If there is a rubber factory in your region then you may be able to make rubber tires, if not - then you will have to use other local materials. Think about the types of transport, tools and materials people used in your region before we had many of the products we now take for granted.
  • Include any special design features that would add to your guests comfort and enjoyment of this new place. We are here to see and experience the sights.
Expected outcome
  • An itinerary of where you would take us and the type of environment it is, including notes on the type of terrain to be crossed in the ATV.
  • An annotated design of your ATV, highlighting what the special features of the vehicle are and why they are needed. You may even be able to make a model of your design.
Reminders: If you live in a busy city your vehicle may need to avoid getting stuck in traffic jams, fit into small car parks and scale tall buildings or stairs.

If you live in the country your vehicle may have to avoid farm fences and animals, as well as dealing with streams, lakes, hills, narrow paths and mountains.

Optional extra activity
Compare and contrast the types of resources, land use and environment your pair school has had to work with. Can you now think of a design that would be suitable in BOTH countries?
