English painters and artists have contributed to our
country's arts. Some painters and artists are very famous
for their work. One famous artist is John Constable, he is
famous for painting romantic landscapes. He was said to be
the master.
John Constable was born on June 11, 1776, in East
Bergholt, Suffolk. The son of a corn merchant. After he left
school he worked in the family business. But he had a
strong interest in art and did have since he was a child.
In 1795 he met an art collecter and amateur painter Sir
George Beaumont, who showed him a landscape painting by
Claude Lorrain from his collection, provoking an early
interest in art. John began to study art theory and in
1799 persuaded his father to allow him to study painting
at the Royal Academy, in London. At this time the Royal
Academy was in a state of disorder and so John mainly
taught himself to paint. He exhibited his first landscape
paintings in 1802 and thereafter studied painting. He
developed his own style. In 1816 his father died and left
John money this meant he was financially secure so he
could at last marry Maria Bicknell. The couple moved to
Hampstead Heath, London, in 1821 and had seven
children, five of them became artists.
John Constable died in London, on March 31, 1837. On March the 31st this year he has been dead 160 years.
