Margaret Mahy

Margaret Mahy was born on 21 March 1936 in Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty. She now lives in Governers Bay near Christchurch. Her hobbies are reading and writing. She also enjoys poetry. Margaret has two daughters named Penelope and Bridget.

She became a nurse when she left school but decided to be a writer. She now has around 120 of her books/stories published. One of her favourites is A Lion in the Meadow.

When she was twelve years she wrote a poem at school about Te Whaiti. It went:

In the little town of Te Whaiti
A fellow put on the wrong nightie
Its owner came in and made a great din
My goodness he did get a frightie.

At school when a decision had to be made about the colour to paint the new prefab classrooms Margaret wrote this:

At first we thought of pink
But navy blue is better
As it doesn't show the ink
Two lorries brought them to the door
The head with joy unpacked them
They were both a pretty grey
I like Margaret Mahy's work because it is funny and imaginative. I have read a few of her books and enjoyed them. Most of her books are for younger readers but she has novels for older readers.
